Child safety, in writing.
You are considering leaving your child with someone you found on the internet. Here is everything you should want to know, before you have to ask for it.
How players are kept safe
Current, and checkable.
Matthew Spoors holds a current Victorian Working with Children Check, number 3958686A-01, valid to 18 September 2031. Verify any card yourself at workingwithchildren.vic.gov.au. Please do.
How sessions run
- A parent or guardian is welcome at every session, and for under-14s I would rather you were there.
- Sessions run at public or semi-public venues: indoor centres and club nets. Never at a private residence, mine or yours.
- No private messaging with players under 18. Messages, video feedback and scheduling go to the parent or guardian, or to a group that includes them.
- Physical contact is avoided. Where a correction genuinely needs it, I ask first, explain why, and do it in view of whoever else is present.
- Public liability insurance. Certificate available on request, before you book rather than after.
Photos and video
Coaching uses video, and almost every session involves filming. Footage of your child is used for coaching only. It is shared only with you, by private link, and never posted publicly, used in marketing, or shown to another player without separate written permission from you, asked for each time.
For a player under 18, you give that consent in writing before the first session. You can withdraw it at any time by emailing me, and any footage is deleted within seven days.
If something goes wrong
If you have a concern about your child's safety or wellbeing in connection with any session, raise it immediately.
First contact: Matthew Spoors, [email protected]
If I am away and unreachable: [NAMED SECOND CONTACT AND THEIR NUMBER]
Serious concerns: Victoria Police on 000, or the Commission for Children and Young People on 1300 782 978. You do not need my permission and should not wait for my response.
I am a mandatory reporter. If I form a reasonable belief that a child is at risk of harm, I am required to report it, and I will.
Questions to ask any coach
Not just me. If a coach cannot answer these in writing, that tells you something.
- Can I see your Working with Children Check number so I can verify it myself?
- Are you insured, and can I see the certificate?
- Can I attend sessions?
- Where exactly do sessions take place?
- How do you communicate with my child, and am I included?
- What happens to video of my child?
- Who do I contact if I have a concern and you are unavailable?
Ask it before you book.
