Matthew Spoors.

Still playing the level I coach toward. That is the whole point of how I coach, and it is also the least interesting thing about why I do it.

  1. The kid. Where you started, and what you were getting wrong at fifteen without knowing it.
  2. The wall. The season or moment it stopped working. Name the feeling, not just the fact.
  3. What nobody told you. The thing that would have saved you three years. The whole page hangs on this.
  4. Who or what changed it. A coach, a conversation, the Canada route. Names and places.
  5. What happened next. Understated. The record is further down this page.
  6. Why that makes you coach. Close the loop back to beat three.

Never "giving back to the game" or "next chapter". Present tense: a player who coaches.

I have played in the Big Bash League for the Perth Scorchers, where I made my debut in December 2024, and the Melbourne Renegades, and List A cricket for Western Australia.

I have played ten T20 internationals and five one-day internationals for Canada, qualifying through my mother. I am an all-rounder: I bat right-handed and bowl leg spin, so batting and spin bowling are both genuinely my own game.

I came through a Western Australia rookie contract while still at school and represented Australia at under-19 level. [Confirm: "I have been coaching privately for more than four years."]

[Cricket Australia coaching accreditation: add your level, or delete this sentence.] I hold a current Working with Children Check, and the full child safety policy is set out here.

Three things I actually believe.

01

Two changes, not twenty

You can hold two technical thoughts under pressure. You cannot hold nine. I would rather fix one thing properly than mention six.

02

The session is the small part

What you do in the six days between sessions decides whether anything changes. Every player leaves with a written plan for that.

03

Honesty over encouragement

If I am not the right coach for you, or the problem is not technical, I will say so before you book rather than sell you a block.
